Hey Family,
This week I want to start by saying thank you to and for offering me space to share a bit of my story with the world. You can read my conversation with Aleshia here and listen to my conversation with Karla here.
<imagine a well-worded segue here>
This week’s deck of notes features a reflection on how my life and art have been changed by the wisdom and courage of others.

Guiding Echoes.
My way of being has been shaped by the wisdom filled echoes of others.
Pierre Soulages showed me how one's obsession can be what distinguishes their art.
Maya Angelou taught me that poetry is less a literary genre and more a language of the soul.
Austin Kleon helped me understand that the only way to find your voice as a writer is to use it.
And bell hooks made it abundantly clear that care is but a fraction of the liberating force that is genuine love.
The wisdom of each of these individuals was not gleaned through conversation but witnessed through the artifacts they’ve left. These artifacts are but tokens of their brilliance. Yet they are all it took for me to begin to dream about my own gifts and where I might find the courage to share them with others.
A poem about gifts:
Would a songbird ever know
it had such sweet songs to sing
if it had never heard
a song sung before?
Would it lament the loss
of a gift it never knew
or would it chirp
like the other birds
thinking it was just
another bird too?
