Rarely, if ever, are the outcomes I experience the ones I set out to achieve when I begin a journey.
For instance, I set out to be a marketing analyst after college and quickly became a marketing copywriter when a coworker quit two months after I was hired.
When I was 26, I set out to be an entrepreneur in hopes of enjoying more freedom and helping a few dozen kids each year. Three and half years later I became an educator with an unbelievable work schedule and the opportunity to help 300+ kids.
Three years ago I decided I wanted to be an artist and began a year-long painting experiment that only a handful of people have been privy to. Today I paint pictures with words that 1,500+ people have the opportunity to experience each week via this newsletter.
If my past is any indication of my future, it’s safe to say I don’t know where I’m going. And I think that’s okay. Because the opportunities and obstacles I’ve wandered into have made me a far healthier and more loving me than I could’ve imagined.
If that’s the kind of magic wandering can produce, then I think I’ll spend a little less effort trying to control my future and bit more time enjoying the journey it sets me on.
We can struggle for control as we resist the unknown or we can learn to dance with the mysteries we are shown.
Creative Habits
Over the last few weeks, I’ve tried my hand at profiling amazing artists and exploring how their stories impacted my own. I’ll be taking a break from it but I enjoyed the exercise.
